Abstract

Background: Students who experience stress in Indonesia alone were found to be 36.7-71.6%. Stress is a disturbance in the body and mind caused by changes and demands of life, which is influenced both by the environment and one's appearance in the environment. Stress faced by students can have an impact on decreased concentration and students who are unable to cope with the pressure during the thesis will tend to delay the thesis preparation process. The delay in the thesis preparation process has a negative impact on students, involving not graduating on time, and even being threatened with dropping out. Efforts that can be made to reduce pressure on students, especially stress, are doing expressive writing therapy.

 Methods: The research design used a pre-experimental one group pre posttest design sampling technique using purposive sampling. Respondents of this study were students who were preparing a thesis at level IV of the Bachelor of Applied Nursing Study Program as many as 128 respondents. The measuring instrument used is the perceived stress scale (PSS-10). This study used the dependent paired sample T-test.

 Results: The results of statistical test analysis before being given therapy were obtained with an average score of 19.74% with the moderate stress category and after being given therapy to 14.34% with the mild stress category with a mean difference of 5.40. From the results of the analysis there is a significant effect of expressive writing therapy on the stress of students writing thesis value with a p of 0.000.

 Conclusion: There is an effect of expressive writing therapy on the stress level of students who prepare a thesis.
