Abstract

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a respiratory disorder characterized by airflow limitation, resulting in decreased oxygen saturation. Oxygen saturation is an important parameter for assessing the clinical condition of patients with COPD. Management of COPD can include non-pharmacological interventions such as balloon blowing exercise and diaphragmatic breathing exercise.

Objective: To compare the effects of balloon blowing exercise and diaphragmatic breathing exercise on improving oxygen saturation in patients with COPD.

Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted using a two-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 36 respondents, divided equally into two groups of 18 respondents each.

Results: The Wilcoxon test showed a mean oxygen saturation of 97 in the balloon blowing exercise group and 98 in the diaphragmatic breathing exercise group. The Mann-Whitney test indicated a significant difference between the two interventions, with a p-value of 0.004 (p ≤ 0.05).

Conclusion: Diaphragmatic breathing exercise is more effective in improving oxygen saturation, with a mean value of 98.
