Background: Vertigo is one of the most common balance system disorders, especially in adults and the elderly. The most common type is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). This condition causes a sensation of spinning dizziness often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and the risk of falls due to balance disorders. Data from Dr. Darsono Pacitan Regional Hospital shows that every month there are 23-30 patients diagnosed with BPPV. One non-pharmacological intervention that can restore balance is the Brandt-Daroff Exercise, which works by facilitating habituation of the vestibular system and returning the otoconia to their original position. The purpose of this scientific paper is to comprehensively analyze nursing care for vertigo patients and implement nursing actions based on Evidence-Based Practice (EBP).
Methods: This scientific paper uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study method. This case study was conducted on two BPPV patients in Bugenvil 2 Room, Dr. Darsono Pacitan Regional General Hospital. Interventions were carried out three times a day during the treatment period. Evaluation was carried out using the Vertigo Symptom Scale–Short Form (VSS-SF) and the Morse Fall Scale before and after the intervention. Data analysis used in this case study was by providing nursing care to vertigo patients with an evidence-based practice nursing approach Brandt-Daroff exercise based on PICOT journal analysis.
Results: Both patients showed a decrease in vertigo symptoms from severe to no vertigo, and a decrease in fall risk from high to moderate. Patients were more stable and able to move independently. The first patient's Vertigo Symptom Scale-Short Form (VSS SF) score decreased from 41 to 12 (no vertigo), and the fall risk score decreased from 75 to 35 (moderate fall risk).
The second patient's Vertigo Symptom Scale-Short Form (VSS SF) score decreased from 32 to 10 (no vertigo), and the fall risk score decreased from 85 to 33 (moderate fall risk).
Conclusion: Brandt-Daroff Exercise is effective in reducing vertigo symptoms, improving balance, and reducing the risk of falls in BPPV patients.
