Efektivitas Common Cold Massage Therapy dan Terapi Uap Minyak Kayu Putih terhadap Tingkat Keparahan ISPA Atas pada Balita

Background: Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs) is dangerous infectious disease and considered one of the highest causes of death among children under five because the low immune system. Medication is not enough to recover the physical problem of child, so complementary therapy is needed. Complementary therapies that can reduce the severity of Acute Respiratory Infections are common cold massage therapy and eucalyptus oil steam therapy.
Objective: To determine the comparison of the effectiveness of common cold massage therapy and eucalyptus oil steam therapy on the severity of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URIs) in toddlers.
Methods: The research used quantitative study with quasi-experiment design using two group pretest and posttest design approach. The sampling technique used purposive sampling, with the criteria being that toddlers were experiencing upper respiratory tract infections and their parents were willing to be respondents. The total sample was 62 toddlers and divided into 2 groups. This research instrument used a questionnaire sheet. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and Mann-Whitney U Test.
Results: There was an effect of giving common cold massage therapy (p=0.000) and eucalyptus oil steam therapy (p=0.000) on the severity of upper respiratory infections in toddlers. There is no difference in effectiveness between common cold massage therapy and eucalyptus oil steam therapy on the severity of Upper ISPA in toddlers (p=0.661), but eucalyptus oil steam therapy is faster in reducing the severity of Upper ISPA when seen from the average reduction in symptom severity (difference= 0.14).
Conclusion: Common cold massage therapy and eucalyptus oil steam therapy are both effective in reducing the severity of upper respiratory tract infections and can be used as non-pharmacological interventions in treating acute respiratory infections in toddlers.
